Abstract

We explore the different and often contrasting personal and group cultural views about diabetes that arise in the physician’s consultation room. They often impair communication and contribute to the failure of treatments and maintain this disease as a major health problem in Mexico. Our data were obtained in the Nahua community in Ixhuatlancillo, Veracruz, Mexico. Our purpose was to identify, through ethnography with a phenomenological approach, patterns of belief and behavior and their influence on patient-physician communication.
