By means of a comparison between soft and hard fibers manufacturing this paper presents the trends and negative consequences of labor accidents in the textile industry in Mexico in 1981 -1994. These trends are analyzed and interpreted in the context of the main economic changes underwent by this industry during that period. These changes increased the polarization regarding labor processes, labor accidents and labor hazards of the manufacturing of the two types of fibers. Resu1 show different profiles related to the diverse types of flexibilization of labor processes. Both manufacturing activities showed a decrease in the frequency of labor accidents. together with a substantial increase in hazard indicators. This increase was clearer for soft fibers manufacturing activities, characterized by more flexibile processes. On the other hand, the manufacturing of hard fibers, which uses backward methods, showed a much higher risk for permanent disability than manufacturing of soft fibers, and the national industrial risk average
