This study examines the professional profile of medical practitioners recently graduated form the Superior School of Medicine (SSM), México, once they have concluded six years of medical training including a compulsory year of social service. This study also examines the degree until which the real student’s profile accomplishes with the ideal professional profile proposed by SSM. The professional profile is evaluated in three aspects: medical knowledge, abilities –skills, and attitudes– values, through a survey within recently graduated medical practitioners, medical social service academic tutors and population of six States in México. The profile of the medical graduates outlines the image of a doctor trained fundamentally for curing practices on an individual basis. Through self-examination they recognised themselves capable to function as general medical practitioners. This was confirmed by the opinion of most of the social service tutors, as well as by the population sampled from the communities where this Social Service was realized. The examined profile was congruent with clinical aspects of the SSM 1997 Medical Programme as well as in a significant part of the characteristics of the ideal professional profile present in the same Programme, but not necessarily congruent with the health needs in México.
