Abstract

The main question expounded in the work titled “I still can, I am productive”: identity, work and health was: How did three workers experience the mass firing by an important pharmaceutical corporation, whose seniorities varied between twenty four and twenty eight years, and how did these events impact on their lives and their health-illness process? The use of Oral History methodology in this research allowed the approach and the recording of information about the workers experiences. The interviews were done at two different times: almost immediately after the dismissal, and one year after our first encounter with the workers. This time interval was enlightening since it made it possible to observe how these workers dealt with the firing in the two different periods and the way in which their loss of employment affected their everyday lives and health.
