This article aims to expose from an anthropological sketch, the problem of disappearances in Mexico, as well as explaining how the process of identification is performed along with families attending the Department of Identification of the Institute of Forensic Sciences (INCIFO) in Mexico City. In order to construct some reflections on the meaning, resulting from the ambiguity of the physical absence of a person within the family. For this, I return to the central idea of the social anthropologist Ferreira (2011), for whom the disappearance is a social problem due to the consequences of multiple factors interrelate; mainly because of complications arising from the separation of both state law enforcement, the family, and that in the Mexican case reveals a larger set of social agents involved in the processes of allocation and distribution of responsibilities to the topic.
