Prácticas de atención utilizadas por adultos mayores con enfermedades crónicas
Abstract
The chronic illnesses that are the primary causes of mortality among older adults present a serious problem which requires changes in life style of the sick persons. Objectives: To gain an understanding of the medical practices used by a group of older adults with chronic illnesses in México City. Research methods: Qualitative methods were used to select a sample of 50 older adults who were clients of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Results: The older adults preferred to first use medical services and complimented these with other alternative treatments. This decision was influenced by their socioeconomic status as well as the relationship with their doctors. Conclusions: It is necessary to have a good patient-doctor relationship so that the patient may feel comfortable discussing problem they may be experiencing with the prescribed course of treatment. This will allow patients to seek other course of treatment with the help and support of their family and the medical technology. This should therefore result in better results or health outcomes their treatment.
