Abstract

Since the late seventies Latin America has experienced profound changes regarding sanitary policies, especially in the growth of private sector health care at the expense of the public sector. This work analyzes the evolution of the health insurance market as part of the pnvatization process of health care in the region. An analysis of the political profile behind the privatization process, as well as the changes in the relations of the state and the private health sector is done. The central hypothesis is that the state promotes and supports the growth of the private market of medical care. This paper analyzes the privatization process in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico during the period 1986-1992, with a particular emphasis on the latter. It also discusses the role of the state in the legal changes related to the national insurance activity
