Abstract

In 2002, the Ministry of Health of the Federal District initiated an unprecedented program in the health sector services of the country’s capital, oriented to focus on the attention of gender violence. This program has been consolidated over the years through the implementation of various strategies for prevention, medical care, psychological counseling and victims. One of them was to create a specific information system, as a mechanism for monitoring and evaluating the activities that will also enable its improvement. From the information generated by this information system, this document describes the cases of gender violence treated in the health units of the Government of the Federal District. The information presented, provides an overview of the type of violence detected and its distribution according to some parameters such as sex, age, school level, right-of-habency and type of aggressor. Also, it describes some variables about the care process, such as the care service where it was detected, the health damage caused and the type of care given. The results support the need to prioritize and strengthen prevention activities, timely detection and comprehensive attention to cases of genderbased violence by health personnel, as well as the usefulness of conducting studies that consider how social, economic and cultural aspects of the country are favoring the prevalence of this public health problem and the responsiveness of the institutions responsible for attending it.
