Abstract

Abstract : In medicine, the learning process, based on professional competence has several interpretations. This was one of the main issues in the last national meeting of the Asociación Mexicana de Facultades y Escuelas de Medicina (AMFEM) (The Mexican Association of Medical Schools). Methodology: A transversal, comparative and explorative study of medical students at UAM-X was carried out. The level of performance of 22 professional activities considered important to examine by a group of expert on the subject, was measured. Results: The activities with a high level of performance were: “the elaboration of medical records”, “examining patients”, “establishing an adequate interaction with patients” and “identifying risk factors”. The activities considered as having an average level of performance were: “establishing a pre-diagnosis” and “prescribing medical treatment”. Conclusions: In the instruction of an integral general practitioner, “the follow up of a patient”, “home care guidance” and “finding out about the patient’s way of living” must be reinforced. The two activities “their interaction with colleagues” and “teamwork”, have an average level of performance, and that the place to acquire this competences is preferably at the hospital. Finally, the activities preferably carried out in the outpatient clinic have a low and average level of performance; therefore, medical schools should look for ways to reinforce them.
